2007 National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day Reaches Thousands!
COK’s veggie dog feed-in in downtown D.C.
July 18, 2007 marked the second annual National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day with more than 30
events held in 17 states nationwide—from feed-ins and leafleting on busy
street corners to neighborhood barbecues. These events, along with an
op-ed
published in the Iowa Press-Citizen, reached out to thousands of people
informing them about the miseries endured by animals raised for food and the benefits of
choosing a more compassionate diet.
Thanks to the generosity of Lightlife Foods, which
sponsored this year’s campaign, hundreds of free veggie hot dogs were given
away to vegetarians-to-be from coast to coast.
Great Sage in Clarksville, Maryland, also joined in the celebration by serving up a
National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day special: veggie hot dogs with your choice of toppings.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to organize and participate in these
events. Your help ensured the success of our second annual National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day!
Below are more photos of from several of the events, plus great feedback from some
of the organizers.
“During our event, we handed out about 80 veggie dogs and distributed tons of
pro-vegetarian materials. This year’s event was not only more successful than
last year’s, but we were also thrilled that the Iowa Press-Citizen published
COK’s
and FAWN’s op-ed. National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day is such a great way to
spread the animals’ message!”
- Will McBride, Farmed Animal Welfare Network in Iowa City, IA
“Seven of us got together and handed out a few hundred [fliers] in about an hour.
COK’s fliers were a hit… They got the message across without being overly graphic…
The most popular fliers were the Easy Vegan Recipe (booklets). Thanks for everything!”
- Ariell at Florida State University, FL
“Our BBQ went great! We had 17 neighbors on our deck enjoying Tofu Pups, Field Roast
Apple Sage Sausages and Veggie Kabobs. I gave a short talk about pigs raised on factory
farms and we had lots of vegetarian options. We had a fun time and it made us feel terrific
to bring attention to how animals are being raised on factory farms and how people can make
a difference by eating veg foods.”
- Claudia in Minneapolis, MN
People eagerly took veggie hot dogs at our mobile feed-in in Baltimore city.
Many people told us that they couldn’t tell that the veggie dogs were not
meat. Even the chefs at the swanky Red Maple restaurant in Mt. Vernon said
that the veggie dogs were delicious. And several people told us they were
considering vegetarianism, so it was great to have the Starter Guides on
hand!!
- Erin Marcus, Baltimore Animal Rights Coalition in Baltimore, MD
We had lots of great interactions with people and everyone loved the
samples. A local vegan market called “Three Little Figs” here in Boulder
made yummy Tofurky chipotle veggie pigs-in-a-blanket and also some vegan ham
and cheese croissants from the same crescent roll dough.
It was a great evening—and your “Easy Vegan Recipes” booklets were a big
hit as always.
- Barbara in Boulder, CO
“Our National (Veggie) Hot Dog Day event went great. Thanks so much for the wonderful materials!”
- Christine Morrissey, East Bay Animal Advocates in Martinez, CA
“I thought the event went great. We ran out of veggie dogs in a matter of minutes!”
- Jenn in Washington, D.C.
